Seed CSA Information

seedcsaWho? The Medomak Valley High School Heirloom Seed Project, the oldest high school seed-saving program in the United States, is starting a Seed CSA.

What? This year, our three month pilot program will connect gardeners with three packages of seasonally appropriate seeds in the months of July, August, and September. Each package will include approximately three seed packets, histories and growing information for each seed, and tips about how to save seed from it. The total cost is $45.

Where? Seed CSA members can opt to pick up their package at Medomak Valley High School or we can ship your package straight to your mailbox. As soon as you receive your package, plant the seeds in your garden!

When? Packages will be shipped at the beginning of July, August, and September. Deadline to register is June 29, 2014.

Why? When you save seed, you often end up with more seed than you can utilize. The Heirloom Seed Project sells seeds through Seed Savers Exchange and our own catalog, but we still have surplus seed in storage, waiting for a home. At the same time, we have been seeking reliable funding for our grant-funded programs. All Seed CSA proceeds will support stipends for the MVHS Teen Ag Crew, a group of four teens who tend the seed-saving gardens, donate food to the community, and develop job skills through a summer of teamwork.

Although you won’t be able to save this seed this year, each package will come with information about saving seed to generate excitement and confidence in starting to save seed in the future. We’re excited to share seeds with you this year that will thrive in the later months of the season, such as lettuce, peas, turnips, and garlic. Our 2015 Seed CSA will start earlier to allow seed saving opportunities across crops, and will be able to feature delicious long-season crops like tomatoes and winter squash.
